Features of an Agrivillage

21st Century Agrivillages

A modern agrivillage will have most of the following features:

Whole system ecological design, planning and engineering to conserve and regenerate resources and provide a superior quality of life.

Conservation easements to protect agriculture, forests, waters, scenery and public access to the oceans and mountains.

Multiple uses - residential, agricultural, commercial, recreational, visitor accommodation, educational, medical.

Multiple dwelling types for all incomes and ages - rentals, multiplexes, cottages and larger homes

A productive on-site economy with a wide range of on-site employment for adults and youth - supported by high-speed telecommunications infrastructure and a business incubator and service center with enterprise and GIS computing facilities.

Learning, teaching and mentoring opportunities for people of all ages - in agriculture, business, computers, athletics, music, hula, healing arts and more.

Community gardens and edible landscaping.

Facilities for sports, arts, music, meetings, performances and more.

4H clubhouse with game room, sound system, dance floor, volleyball court and more.

Pedestrian paths, trails, and bikeways to minimize on-site motor vehicle traffic, and a shuttlebus service to nearby villages and towns.

Water and energy efficiency and harvesting using catchments, reservoirs, windmills, solar panels and hydropower generators.

On-site sewage and solid waste processing using wetlands, composting and recycling.

Village management of common lands, roads and facilities.

Agrivillages can range from 50 to 200 units, clustered on 60 to 100 acres - plus adjoining agricultural land. The layout will depend on acreage, topography, waterways, prevailing winds, soil types, existing structures, and location relative to other settlements. The percentage of affordable dwelling units will depend on a variety of factors, including but not limited to financial constraints.
